Hop into History this Spring - save the dates!

We're once again going to Hop into History at Gibb's Hundred Brewing this semester! We've got three dates scheduled this Spring:

• Thursday, February 21 
• Thursday, March 21 
• Thursday, April 18 

All will be from 5-7pm at Gibb's location at 504 State Street in Greensboro.

The February event will focus on Charlotte Hawkins Brown and the Palmer Memorial Institute. The awesome folks at the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum in eastern Guilford County will be bringing artifacts that show Dr. Brown's work as an educator, as well as her work as a supporter of suffrage, civil rights, and social justice. Founded by Dr. Brown in 1902, Palmer was one of the first elite Black boarding schools in the South. Open until 1971, Dr. Brown transformed the lives of more than 1,000 African American students. Hop into History!: Guilford County, Slavery, and Freedom recap

On Thursday, February 16th, archivists from UNCG, Guilford College, and Wake Forest came together to create a display for Hop into History!: Guilford County, Slavery, and Freedom. David Gwynn and Richard Cox, both members of the UNCG Libraries' Electronic Resources and Information Technology department, were on hand to discuss their work in digitizing runaway slave ads and in building the Digital Library on American Slavery (DLAS). The Digital Library on American Slavery is an expanding resource compiling various independent online collections focused upon race and slavery in the American South, made searchable through a single, simple interface.

The exhibit is part of an ongoing series of Hop into History outreach events organized by UNCG's Special Collections and University Archives. These events take archival materials of the library and into the community, allowing more and more people to learn about local history and interact with these important and interesting documents.

Hop into History: Guilford County, Slavery, and Freedom event --- this Thursday!

On Thursday, February 16 from 5pm until 7pm, archivists from UNCG, the Heritage Research Center at High Point Public Library, Wake Forest, and Guilford College will be at Gibb’s Hundred Brewing Company in Downtown Greensboro (117 W Lewis St) with a multimedia exhibit on the slavery era in North Carolina, with a focus on Guilford County.

Come learn about Harriet Peck, an inspiring abolitionist and teacher at New Garden Boarding School from 1837-1839. Speak with archivists about North Carolina Quaker attempts to legally provide freedom to slaves. See anti-slavery tracts, runaway slave ads, and more, while discovering history made personal by searching the Digital Library on American Slavery for relatives and more.

Hop into History!

On Thursday, September 15 from 5pm until 7pm, archivists from UNCG will be at Gibb’s Hundred Brewing Company in Downtown Greensboro to launch the new monthly "Hop into History
 series with an exhibit on the local civil rights landscape in the 1950s and 1960s.

Come see the typewriter used by one of the first African American students to enroll at UNCG in Fall 1956, a scrapbook created by Curly Harris (the manager of Woolworth’s during the 1960 sit ins), a flyer distributed by students leading a boycott of segregated businesses on Tate Street in 1963, materials from the Black Power Forum held at UNCG in November 1967, and more.

We’ll also have coloring pages for the kids and even some doggie treats for any visiting history hounds. HISTORY IS FOR EVERYONE! We hope you’ll join us for this great opportunity to learn more about your local history and archives while enjoying your favorite beer! Baconessence food truck will be at the taproom too, so you can plan to have your dinner as well!
