The Red Cross Girls

Afloat with the Flag

One of many patriotic series spawned by World War I, the "Red Cross Girls" was the earliest and most prolific, with ten titles appearing between 1916 and 1920. Despite the images on the cover, the endpapers of this series depict a world curiously detached from the horrors of war.

Those endpapers were generic ones used by the publisher, Winston, of that era and earlier. Note the 1908-style biplane. It was not specific to this series.

This series was written by Margaret Vandercook, a real person as opposed to a house pen name as was common for series books.
